Brian Asey
Brian Asey is the 55 year-old father of three children: two sons and a daughter. He has been incarcerated since 1998 and is serving a sentence of 83 years-to life. It was not until 2009, that he realized the wide array and full potential of opportunities available to him behind walls. He began learning about how his childhood experiences had played a role in some of the poor choices and decisions he made in his early years. He now uses that knowledge to ensure he doesn't make the same poor choices.
Immersing himself in a number of self-help programs, Brian has graduated from: GRIP (Guiding Rage Into Power), NVC (Non Violence Communication), and VEG (Victims Offender Education Group). Coming to stopping violence and instilling teamwork environment in his community, Brian is a member of the San Quentin's Day of Peace Committee, and serves as General Manager of the San Quentin Basketball Program. He is also the proud recipient of an A.A. degree from Mount Tamalpais College.
Brian's passion is using his extensive multi-media experience and resources to dispel the negative images with which mainstream media frequently portray the incarcerated population. In addition, to participating and managing many of sports programs at the prison, Brian was a proud Inside Curator for TEDx San Quentin, where he also headed the event's video production committee.
Brian is the Executive Director of the San Quentin Prison Report (SQPR), a video and radio production outlet that gives voice to the voiceless men of San Quentin. He directs and edits programming for SQTV, helping to choose and shape the institution TV content. He continues to be dedicated to doing whatever he can to help transform the lives of those who have: negative influence in our communities and neighborhoods into positive role models.
