Restorative Media is a non-profit 501(c)(3). Our mission is to give voice to the wisdom of lived experience, advance intellectual ownership, produce social impact entertainment, and distribute narratives that inspire transformation.
The portrayal of disenfranchised and marginalized people in the news, movies, music, podcasts, and politics does not accurately represent the community in culturally productive ways. The legal structure of television and film production currently exploits the lived experiences of those same people. Typically, in order to have your story produced a person is required to sign away his or her rights in perpetuity.
We employ formerly incarcerated and systems-impacted people to develop and cast in narratives designed to create social impact and shape the community in ways that culturally benefit society.
We are driven by our commitment to effect change in our community for the betterment of all of humanity.
We recognize ownership of the rights to one’s own life story as intellectual property that should primarily benefit the individual who lived it, his/her family, and the community we live in.
We believe that ownership of a person’s life story (i.e. lived experience) is no different than the exploitation of a person who does not get to benefit from his or her labor (i.e. slavery).
